This website provides information about the Canterbury Justices of the Peace Association, the services provided by a Justice of the Peace, how and where to find a JP and other useful information. 

Justices of the Peace are volunteers who offer their services to the community. There is no charge for the services Justices of the Peace perform.  Justices of the Peace cannot accept any gift, in cash or kind.

Services Justices of the Peace offer include:

  • Certify copies of documents (including email attachments and phone messages).
  • Remember to take the original as well as the copy to be certified.
  • Acting as a judge in family courts, traffic courts etc.
  • Helping district courts with ‘bail bond process.
  • Issuing search warrants used by Police and other law enforcement agencies.
  • Take oaths, declarations, affidavits or affirmations.
  • Witnessing counting of votes at local and parliamentary elections.
  • Being a ‘nominated witness’ for police interviews of child / young person and mental health patients.
  • Visitor sponsorship application
  • Kiwisaver withdrawal application
  • Citizenship application
  • Rates rebate application
